Snow Skiing in Maine
There’s a lot to do outdoors in Maine. However, the true Maine winter experience arrives in the mountains. Maine has quite a few ski slopes providing the exhilarating rush you get from going down the slope.
Some of New England’s best ski resorts reside in Maine – in fact Maine has six world class resorts. While not an all inclusive list, below are some of the resorts, starting with the closest to Cozy Knoll Cabins:
Mt. Jefferson Ski Area – Lee, ME (9 mi)
New England Outdoor Center – Millenocket, ME (44 mi)
Hermon Mountain Ski Area – Hermon, ME (64mi)
Further away, but still a nice drive are Sugarloaf
Maine Interconnected Trail System (ITS)
Thousands of miles of maintained snowmobile trails throughout Maine are available to followers of this exciting and popular winter sport – and Cozy Knoll Cabins is just a minute away from one of the more popular trails, ITS-81.
Many of the trails interconnect and adventurous snowmobilers can travel extensively, even beyond Maine’s borders into Canada and New Hampshire. This growing network of trails is the product of a cooperative program between snowmobile clubs, municipalities, private landowners and the Bureau of Parks and Lands.
Local clubs and towns produce local and regional maps with details of individual trail systems, a listing can be found through the link below to the Maine Snowmobile Association:
The ITS map is updated each year to reflect changes and additions to the trail system for the upcoming season. New maps are usually available for distribution by late October. ITS maps can be obtained from the MSA office, 7 Noyes Street Place in Augusta, at some Maine Tourism Association locations (info centers along I-95), at the annual Maine Snowmobile Show, at out of state snowmobile shows, at some MSA supporting business member locations, chambers of commerce or from a local snowmobile club.
NOTE: Snowmobile maps should not be used to determine travel routes for any vehicle other than a snowmobile. It is against the law in Maine to operate an ATV, dune buggy, 4-wheel drive vehicle, motorcycle or any motor vehicle other than a snowmobile on a snowmobile trail funded by Maine’s Snowmobile Trail Fund, unless the landowner has given permission for the activity. This is true at any time of the year.

ATV Options for the Area
Maine has over 5,000 miles of ATV trails that lead through woodlands, meadows and along backwoods streams. More than half of the ATV trails in the state are in the Maine’s Lakes and Mountains Region; while some ATV trails are, in part, on private lands; many other trails take advantage of abandoned railbeds or public reserve acreage. Dozens of ATV clubs pepper the state, and they manage their own trail systems, and in some many cases providing maps to both members and non-members.
Several clubs local to the Lincoln, Maine area include: The Dwinal Pond 4 Seasons club, Seboeis Stream ATV Club, Downeast Lakes Region, The Penobscot Off Road Riders, & The MT. Jefferson BackCountry Riders. These clubs maintain hundreds of miles of local trails that interconnect to adjoining club trails, thus providing thousands of miles of awesome trails that offer a wide range of riding enjoyment for the novice as well as the expert rider.

An absolutely amazing network of trails makes it possible for ATV riders to travel throughout most of the State of Maine. These trails include multi-use and multi-use rail trails through scenic recreation and wildlife areas. Be on the lookout for other trail users and wildlife on these trails. Much like the snowmobile trails, local ATV trails are a short distance from Cozy knoll Cabins, giving you access to hundreds of miles of exciting trails to ride. You’re almost guaranteed to see something new each time you visit Maine, and ride our trails. It’s truly amazing the places you can go, and sites you can see, and not needing to follow a road or a dotted line.
However, we do ask that you remain courteous of wildlife and property. Much of our trail system is on private property – these property owners do not have to open their land for use as ATV trails – they do so of their own will. Respecting them and their property will ensure it’s continued availability in our beautiful trail system.
