TRS-80 Model 100

Greetinz Retro Fans! Today in the Retro Room we have a true classic – the TRS-80 Model 100. This gem was one for the first true portable computers of the day, when it was released in 1983. The 100 was indeed a TRUE portable computer, easy to tote around and had built in storage (battery powered). For more permanent storage, there was a cassette interface, and a RS-232C for an external floppy drive.

Unlike the Model 4P – which was also considered to be a portable computer, but most certainly of the ‘luggable’ class, the Model 100 was a lightweight and elegant design. It was also reliable and very durable. When loaded with the ‘AA’ batteries, it had a surprisingly long operating time. Of course, there was also a wall wart power supply available  as well.

Mine was obtain thru, obviously, eBay, and I received a pretty good deal. These devices were used well into the early 2000’s, primarily by journalists who had spent more than 20 years with them. Partly due to the familiar workflow, but also due to the keyboard, let’s face it, these devices were pretty durable compared to the laptops of the time (the rugged models notwithstanding) The 100 came with it’s own integrated BASIC and several apps including an address book.

These are great little retro units, and I’ll be exploring this one more as time permits. There are add-on ROMs the really make these devices portable powerhouses, even by today’s standards.
